Force feeding patriotism and nationalism……

The debate between the importance of ” state” and ” individual” is too long and controversial in the history of mankind. Some thinkers have given so much importance to the STATE that the people or the individuals have become only tools or of no significance. Some authors have given so much importance to the individuals that values, principles, and institutions became weak and subordinated to an authoritarian ruler.

In fact, I don’t want to stretch much and come to the point on the issue of patriotism and nationalism. I want to analyze and discuss how much ” nationalism” and ” patriotism” is too much and how much it should be there to create a balance between’ individual freedom’ and pursuing the goals of nationalism.

In the recent years, it was seen in the country that people were forced to say something like Bharat Mata Ki Jai or the Supreme Court ‘s recent judgment to play “national anthem” in cinema halls before the screening of every film and everybody should compulsorily stand up when the national anthem is playing. These issue exhibit something unusual and disturbing. Can we be forced to love something?  Someone has said once that love is absent where fear is. And why people should be forced to stand up when national anthem playing?  I want to discuss the futility of the arguments:

  1. Even if people stand up for the national anthem, it may be possible that they are not nationalist at all. And who defines what is nationalism? People who are not following traffic rules or having the feeling of hatred towards the marginalized community, they might stand up but are they nationalist?
  2. And how the court and the criminal justice system will enforce this order? It is something impossible to enforce when courts and police system are overburdened and they are not able to punish the hardcore criminals.
  3. Why only cinema halls and not the parliament or courts or colleges and so many others places where national anthem should be played?

In fact, the point is not that people should not respect our national flag or national anthem rather they must respect and imbibe the feeling of nationalism. But force can lead to resistance and it will be totally futile exercise. There is need to create credibility in the institutions of the state and its representatives of the people so that they can give inspiration and people automatically love the country and its principles and institutions.

I will conclude from where I have stated that it is very difficult to choose between ” people” and ” state”. However, the most important thing in the today’s world is that they exist for each other. Without the state, people feel vulnerable and without the people, the state is of no value. So, there is need to create a balance between the rights of the people and respect for the state/country/nation. Rights and duties for “STATE” towards its people are more and more but ” PEOPLE” also have duties towards the state.

A random conversation with waiter in an Indian restaurant utsav in New York

Today I was very hungry because I did not eat anything last night. So after settling down I went outside to eat something but unfortunately the breakfast time was over by then. So I bought some fruits and juice and roamed here and there observing people and came back to hotel room. When Chaitanya came back from office, we decided to go to indian restaurant. So we went again to the Indian restaurant utsav, which is located in West 46 street, times square New York.
So we were just looking to menu book for ordering the food, one guy came to give aloo tiki which was complimentary for the day. And suddenly he asked that do we speak hindi? So, we said yes. And then he said he is hindu from Pakistan. So we were little surprised by hearing that ” hindu from Pakistan. He was the first Hindu from Pakistan with whom I met. He was little sad because he is living in USA for last nine years and he did not go back even single time. He was looking sad which we can see from his face. I asked him why you are not bringing your family here? So he said it is very difficult to get visa in Pakistan for Hindus.
This random talk made me think very seriously about the issue related with India and Pakistan relations. These countries are created for the welfare of its people and the real purpose of politics is to bring about happiness in the life of the people but we can see what is really happening. People are forced to suffer due to the dirty politics of the day. When our leaders will realise that the ultimate aim is to create happiness for the people.
One more thing I experienced from this conversation is that family, friends and your own home, state, country are everything for everyone. These are the invaluable things for anyone. We can not live a happy life without these even if we have lot of money. So , spend time with your near and dear ones because time is running out……

Hey Ram!

Today I watched this movie titled – Hey Ram (2000) and I am totally moved by the movie. Why we have so much hatred still in our heart for others. Why do we divide people on the basis of religion, caste, race etc? Why don’t we live peacefully? Losing your dear ones is the most painful experience of anyone’s life. I did not know this till I lost my loved ones. I had very few people in my life but I lost some. I can never forget the pain it brought to me. Why don’t people understand that there is no end to hatred and violence? Violence can only bring more pain and nothing else. When anyone looses her/his near and dear ones due to violence and fighting, they can never come back by killing others or harming others and how long they think that it will continue. Only revenge is born from revenge.

Even after so many years of existence of life and more than six decades of our independence, we are still fighting in the name of religion, caste, sex etc. Every religion talks about peace and harmony. In fact, I should not even talk about religion because sometimes I think that religion has become a tool in the hands of few to terrorize and to serve its own selfish motives. Why don’t we only talk about humanity and love? Isn’t love a religion?  I think that there have always been two kinds of people everywhere- one who wants to live peacefully and one who doesn’t. Some people will say that I am talking about an utopia where everyone is equal and peace-loving. However, It is very hard to accept the fact that everyone wants to live peacefully and happily.

It is very hard to walk on the path of peace, patience and accepting the mistakes of others. But one who does this is the real master of life. We should never lose hope because it is my firm belief that HOPE IS FAITH. We always salute the courage of someone who had overcome his/her hardships and blossoms into the new world. Many people live their lives in abject poverty, which is a form of violence, in areas where people are dying because of war, violence etc. But the real hero is the one who passes through it peacefully. Why don’t we understand the value of life? It is very short and we had less time to love and no time to hate and we must devote all time towards love and peace because time is running out for everyone. We only realize the value of life when we had no life to live more. Whatever we do and have done in our life, our conscience is aware of all and we can’t hide anything from that. Until and unless, our conscience and our action actions are same, there will never be peace. The guilt will never let us sleep. So, I can only hope that people’s conscience should get awake and love and happiness should spread.

Caste discrimination and demand for reservation

Here I remember the scene of the movie ‘PK’ starred by Amir Khan where he is looking for the “thappa”( the mark) on a new born child. When we come on this earth, we do not have any identities. All superficial identities are pasted on our back by our family, surroundings as well as the whole society. In fact, we proud Indians wear all narrow identities on our sleeves. On the face of it, lets talk about the most talked identity of Indians- the caste and its system.

Indian society is divided into innumerable castes since ancient time. It has gone so many changes as well as intermixing and most importantly reformation also but we do not want to leave our caste identities. It seems that caste has been ingrained in our brain as well as genes. The most tragic part of the caste system is that it provides the power to some sections to oppress and humiliate others. It is not that everyone is like that but a large section persists with all caste biases and prejudices.

To ameliorate the century old caste atrocities and oppression, the Constitution of India introduced some affirmative measures in the form of various concessions and reservations to  bring about positive change in the society. Certainly, these measures brought about positive change in the life of many but there is a long way to go in transforming the mindset of the society. Even after all measures taken by the state, the caste oppression and discrimination persist in the society due to various institutional, structural and systemic failures. Here, we need a deep, systemic and societal reform to bring about the real transformation in the society.

Come to the demand for reservation from various sections of society from various parts of the country every now and then. Now is the turn of Jat in Haryana. Before this kapu community in Andhra Pradesh was demanding quota and the last year, Patel community in Gujarat was protesting and asking for quota in the government jobs. It is very complex to understand why this is happening? In fact, I am really puzzled that the way people are asking for quotas, the day is not far when all forward communities will also demand for quotas. Will giving quota to one community solve the issue? There is already a Supreme Court Judgement regarding providing reservations which should be based on some specific criterion. Certainly, the vote-bank politics is one of the most important reason, which is responsible for these quota demands. Political parties promise caste-based reservations in their election manifestos for winning the election. It emboldens them to go on rampage for demanding reservations. Another reason can be that people are thinking that reservation is the only way to get government job in this competitive environment. Take a example of JAT community. They are the dominated community of western UP and Haryana. They have lot of land as well as they are also politically influential in their respective states. They also have lot of money due to recent selling of lands to corporate sectors. However, they do not dominate the intellectual class as well as officers class. And they are also not that much fluent in English so that they can get job in Corporate sectors. That is why , they think that quotas for them will solve the problem of employment opportunity in government sector.

In fact, there is no end to this issue because  there are so many strands and complexity  present in the issue. In the last, I can only say that we really need non-partisan, accountable, fair and transparent administration and the government system which can bring about substantial reform and transformation in the areas of education and employment opportunities in the country. The role of civil society as well as individuals is also important because the real change can come only by the effort of every individual.

Solutions of the present crisis:

* Do not provide to reservation benefits if three generations of the family have used it to get government jobs.

* Strengthen the “creamy layer system” and make it transparent.

* Provide free world class education to all atleast till 12th class. Develop massive infrastructure and create quality manpower for teaching and training purposes.

* Every human being in India must be treated with dignity and respect.

* Most importantly, create job opportunities for skilled,semi-skilled and unskilled people of the county.

* Root out the massive corruption and unethical behaviour from the country. It is creating insurmountable inequality in the country.  1% Indians have around 80-90 % of wealth of the country. Other 99% are managing with 10-20% of the wealth. It will only create resentment and anger and will lead to disaster for our country.

Our country’s leadership need to work on war footing to solve the pressing problems faced by the country. Discrimination on the basis of caste as well as inequality due to economic reasons  both must go from this land to make it a happy and prosperous country.

Why popular is always against the reality

I don’t know is it true for whole world or only for India and Indians. Why don’t we accept the reality? Why we always run for popularity, populism etc. Take the example of politics first: Politics is about bringing about solutions for problems and issues present in the society but the political parties and its leaders are guided by their vested interests and try to fulfill their narrow ideals. Even if they understand the issues in the best interest of the country, they ignore it to fulfill their selfish interests. They do politics to get votes and they used to go any extent to win the elections without realizing the massive repercussions of their decisions. Whenever any leader takes appropriate decision in the interest of the country, we call him/her visionary or great. In fact, he/she is the most normal who is doing things which he was supposed to do as being the public representative.

In fact, it is not the responsibility of one individual, the psyche of our society is framed in this manner for a long time. And the number has become everything. It seems that there is presence of tyranny of majority. Take the example of Indian Cinema: We run for those films who crossed 100 crore mark or those who are acted by popular actors. I never understood the reason behind it, why we have forgotten the reality. It is said that cinema is the mirror of society but still large section go to movies to run from the reality. I really like the reality based cinema because they depict our stories and the issues of the common people. The irony of the issue is that popular cinemas get most recognition and awards also. If you will ask the name of the reality based cinemas- the mountain man, titli, the gangs of wasseypur, the lunch box,Paan Singh Tomar etc., many people even do not know the names of these movies. However, there is a section of society who understands things. What we can do is to increase this section by doing every bit whatever we can do.

My concern is that our country can not become great until and unless we will come out from the fantasy of our life.

Jnu row and intolerance debate

What is happening in our country? I really don’t understand and when few people including me talk about intolerance, people come forward spontaneously and say that we are wrong, India is and has been a tolerant country since time immemorial. I really do not find a bit of tolerance in our society. People are discriminated and abused on the basis of colour, religion, region, nationality and most importantly caste. I am not supposed to give examples as they are present in the everyday newspaper. Why these people don’t understand that we are human beings first before wearing other identities which were created by us only.

Whatever happened in jnu, I got to know about the whole issue by newspaper report as well as media including social media. Extreme form of protest comes from extreme form of grievances. Rather discussing why they have said something extreme against our nation, we should try to understand what is the issue and why it is happening? We should not react and take law in our hands.  In fact,  I love my country ie INDIA like anything but tell me one thing if I have any questions or concerns or grievances, where I should go? I will tell to my country , to its leaders who are our representatives. Every child of a mother is not same. I think that everyone has the right to protest. Do we not go against our parents when we think  that they are not getting our point. However, we must not abuse our county which is like our mother and must not talk about its destruction. Protest/ opposition should not lead to destruction or separatism.

Ideology is something strange idea, I read in political science. It is a contested concept and there are various versions of this. In fact when we read about all ideologies present in the society, we will not be able to find the ultimate truth. Be the Capitalism, Socialism, Marxism, Fascism etc. Not everyone agrees to one ideology and say that this is good for all. Why to run for ideologies ? Why not to look for humanity? Whenever we see a small kid, we spontaneously smile leaving our prejudices and biases behind. But when it comes with dealing with people, we will bring all our preconceptions and prejudices. In fact, it is not the mistake of one individual rather the whole society needs another reformation so that we can come out from the darkness which is prevailing in the present time.

The real problem is that the people who are responsible to bring about societal changes, are actually instigating the issue for their vested interest. The time has come to say ‘enough is enough’ and we must rise and try to bring about the change in society. Why to look towards other people, we should start from ourselves because once Gandhi ji said “Be the change what you want to see in this world”.

Random story of autowala

Once I was traveling from Delhi to gurgaon by auto rickshaw. I was talking to auto driver and asking him about his life. After talking to him, I got so much insights of life that I can never find these things in my any books which are always my best friend. Let’s come to the story as narrated by the auto wala. The way he was talking, it seems that he knows so many things, switching between his life and the problems prevailing in the society.

Before starting his story, he says, his life is no more. I was little bewildered when he said this. Then he told me that his wife is no more and he spend all his money as well as sold his house for bearing the expenses of her health and finally he and his wife lost the battle against the nasty disease of cancer. Now he is alone living with his son in a rented house and trying hard to make his life. But still, his resilience and never dying spirit is there to make me feel that it is not about hurdles in life but about facing and moving ahead in life.

The most touching thing for me is that he equates his life with his wife, if his wife is not there, his life has no meaning. Selfless love indeed. I don’t remember his name, auto’s number or anything else but I remember his story. In my opinion , he is living his life full satisfaction and he is a nice person. These small stories are a great example of beauty of life.
